I was checking out the results from last week's races in Greenville, SC and noticed that the same guy won both the road race and crit for the Cat5 35+ races. So, I did a USA Cycling search and--lookie here--it appears we have the ultimate sandbagger:

http://www.usacycling.org/results/index.php?compid=223855

Keep in mind that those are just the *reported* results. I'm sure he's a nice guy and what-not but sheesh. That's ridiculous.

The annual Officials meeting here is this weekend so I don't have all
the details, but it looks like they've really tightened up the rules
around sandbagging and Cat's.

Let's see...in the last 12 months, the racer in question had an
average finish of 16th in cat 5 races. Looks like he's ready to turn
pro.

Before following the link I thought it would be page after page of 1st
places. It's not as bad as that.

That said, he should upgrade.

It is that bad -- the man needs counseling. Wanting to stay in 5's and a sound
state of mind are mutually exclusive.

So he didn't bother to upgrade to Cat 4, big whoop. South Carolina
probably has combined fields of 4/5s, and a Masters C category, so it
makes no difference whatsoever if he "upgrades" from 5 to 4. He
probably has enough points to start 2007 as a Cat 3, which only means
they will confiscate the other half of his brain now.

Dan, I must beg to differ here. Staying in the 5's and a sound state
of *skin* I would think to be actually mutually exclusive.

Oh-- or maybe that's what you meant. Nevermind!

I thought you needed 6 top 6 finishes to upgrade?
It took him all season to get the 6.... where's the sandbagging/
cherrypicking?

Results don't matter in cat 5 other than "finish" or "not finish". Do your 10
and move on.

I would not call that sandbagging.......
He has a season of results BUT only a few good results (top 10 or even top
5)

These are the same guys some of you ***** about because they get to cat 3
but do not have enough experience (enough races) to be safe and flow with
the field.

I would recommend to most guys to finish out the season at a 5 and get the
experience you will need at a higher category.

it doesn't take much to win a Cat5 35+ race...basically a bike and make
sure you're still breathing.
