Sheldon B has one of his project bikes set up so that a seatpost collar (28.6mm) holds up the fork steerer through a threadless headset instead of a stem: http://sheldonbrown.org/iro/584/pages/08.htm. It looks like an ingenious idea. It bypasses the long standing limitation for threadless systems where stem height adjustability is nil except for replacing it with a higher or lower rise stem. However, since I do a lot of mountain biking, I'm wondering if this one-bolt set up will strong enough to bash the bike around through the woods. I certainly wouldn't want do big drops on it. It looks fine for a road or touring set up. Anybody tried this on a mtb?

The problem with using a seatpost collar is that sometimes there's a lip that you have to file off before it will fit snugly around the steerer. Problem Solvers (aka QBP) now makes a special clamp for this:
I think Sheldon has said that he adjusts the preload by pushing down while tightening the clamp. I'm too ham-fisted to do that, and instead temporarily install a stack of spacers and a top cap. But I think you can use one of these to make it easier to get fine-tuned adjustment:

Right, lip didn't occur to me. Maybe use two of the above clamps for mtb application.

Well, I'm never seated on the saddle when I'm bombing down a hill or doing drops, so it has zero chance of failing. That is for my hardtail ride. On my dual sus ride, I've rode down a hill seated, but no, the seatpost collar never failed.

It works just fine; I've been running one of mine that way for a while. I briefly had it set up with two stems; a threadless holding the handlebars, and a quill with just a short stub bar that was used for extra lighting and accessories.
