Looking for advice...I have a GT ZR 4.0 circa 1999 or 2000 I believe. It came with a low end Mavic wheelset and I am looking to upgrade. I need a good balance between speed and durability as I compete (amatuer) and ride organized rides like the MS 150 (Houston-Austin)....any advice?

What's your budget? Do you want a deep section rim, or something in between? The Mavic's are a solid wheel, but you pay a bit for the name...plus, everyone has them (this may not be a factor for you)...consider a handmade DT Swiss set like these (http://www.dtswiss.com/index.asp?fuseaction=wheels.bikedetail&id=1)...cheaper & lighter than the SL's and arguably the best hub available.

Others include:
  • Velomax Tempest II/Ascent II (depending on your preference for rim profile)
  • American Classic 420's
  • Bontrager Race X Lite Aero (nice stiff wheel)
  • Campy Eurus
there are a lot of wheels out there.
