V- Brake upgrade

The "upgrade" first would depend on whether there is a leverage adjustment
on the levers. The first V compatible XTR levers had a screw type adjuster.
The point is; for cantis this should be set so the cable end is closest to
the hinge. For Vs, the farthest. From that point there isn't a "kit" just
buy two sets of XTR brakes (or your favorite flavor of other brands - Avid
in my case) and some new cables and you're good to go.

There is a slot in the lever, however I can find no way to keep the yoke in
the outer most part of the slot.

Make sure that you have M950 levers (the 1997 model). Sounds like you
have M910 levers. M950 levers where designed to work with v-bakes the
adjuster that is built in to an M950 is a "pitch adjuster" just like
the pitch blocks in M750 XT levers. The intended use was to allow for
the ajustment of braking force and "feel" with v-brakes. It was never
indended to be used for interchanging between canti's and V's.

I posted this a couple of months ago, for someone fiddling with XT
pitch blocks.

Those plastic spacers are "pitch adjusting blocks," According to
Shimano (Jed Hazen), with all of the blocks out the rider gets "an
ample degree of braking force from a minimal amount of brake lever
input." The line is, that the beginner setup is with all the blocks in
place, and the most advanced is with all the blocks removed. The M950
XTR levers had a similar setup, only they used a block and screw so
the pitch was micro
adjustable.
