that's a good point Paul, it's beautiful where I am too, but when I
made the decision I wanted to get it over with asap. I'll make up for
it by biking in the snow in a couple of months.. :)

You must stink, then. It's pretty common amongst cycle commuters to do
their commute, towel off (maybe use one of those anti-bacterial wipes)
then go on your way with a fresh shirt and socks. No need to shower. I'm
no less socially acceptable for not wasting time showering a second time
(having already showered in the morning).

Thanks for the advice, though.

I couldn't really. My wife didn't pick the right time to get Deep Vein
Thrombosis.

Yeah, that was part of my thinking. I don't mind biking in winter/fall.
It's my favorite time, in fact. Less yahoos on the road.

Last year I didn't have a choice... had emergency surgery in mid march
(the same day as the bombing in madrid). However, I was on the trainer 6
weeks later, as soon as I was given the go-ahead. The weather was still
sh*tty, but the next week I went for my first ride, at the end of april.
So I missed all of march and april, but the weather is usually horrible
anyways. I was just so glad to get out on my bike! I was just glad it
hadn't happened in july or something.

They make mountain bike shorts that are exactly like that, as well as
touring shorts that are somewhat intermediary (kind of like "coaches
shorts.") Some styles also offer a removable liner.

No more than you, or most folks who ride a fast 15 mile jaunt to work.

Not around here; cycle commuters shower, and having shower facilities
is a common request of employers. At a company I helped launch 9 years
ago that was the number one request, and to satisfy it we had to make a
deal with the gym down the street. Where I work now there is a queue
for the 1 shower in the morning.

I'm a LOT bigger than you-- 54" waist, 31" thighs-- and I do fine with
3XL shorts from here:

I wear them instead of underwear when I'm going to be putting in some
miles, but I still want to be wearing ordinary clothes.
