  2. Make this basic curry sauce, sautee (more) some onions, and add a
couple of drained cans of chick peas to it. You can also use lentils
in the gravy. It's not exactly soup, but with the chick peas, it's
    incredible.

Serve it with rice or warmed pita bread.

My mother's recipe has been an old standby:

@@@@@ Now You're Cooking! Export Format

    Vegetable And Beef Stew

    soups and stews

    1 pound beef stew bone
    1 1/2 pounds stew meat
    2 onions; chopped
3 potatoes; cut in 1/2" cubes
    4 carrots; coarsely chopped
    3 stalks celery; coarsely chopped
    2 small cans tomato sauce
1 14 1/2 oz. canned tomatoes; peeled and chopped
    1/4 cup barley

Boil stew bone and meat in 4 quarts water until cooked through, about
1 hour. Remove stew bone. Add remaining ingredients and salt and
pepper to taste. Simmer another hour or until all vegetables are
    tender.

Do try to find pot barley, not pearled barley, as the latter turns to
    mush in soups.

    Yield: 12 servings

Note: Feel free to toss in whatever vegetables strike your fancy. I
usually add some beef bouillon (I particularly like the "Better Than
Bouillon" beef base) if the broth seems weak.
