veloce 9 speed shifters with shimano 8 speed cassette?

Does anyone know if there would be a problem with using campag veloce 9 speed shifters with an 8 speed cassette? i presume it'll be ok and that i just wont use the top or bottom gear on the shifters but need a bit of advice from someone who knows more than me! there wouldnt be a problem with spacing between the sprockets would there? Also is there a problem with using campag shifters with a shimano or sram cassette?

You might be able to work it out with a ShiftMate (#1 has a ratio that's close to what you need):

Set it up so that the extra click on the shifter is past the small cog.
It will work better if you can get a Shimano 9s cassette onto your wheel.
