Velocity Fusion on the front/Deep V on the rear?

I can buy a black 36 hole 105 hubset pretty cheap at performance.

I was thinking of using black wheelsmith butted spokes with a velocity fusion rim up front and a velocity Deep-V in the rear.

Anybody try to mix rims like this. (the rims look exactly the same except the fusion is 5mm lower in profile and lighter weight)

Seems like a good idea. I'd put a Deep V in the front too, but it just seems like massive overkill with a 36 hole front hub.

This entire wheelbuild would come out to be about $200 plus my own labor. Not the lightest set-up, but I'm sure it would be extremely tough due to the stiff rims and butted spokes.

A wheel builder "Well Spoken Wheels" makes the Fusion front Deep V rear as one of his standard packages.
I think it makes good sense.

You could go with aero spokes or 14/17 DB spokes up front to make it even more interesting. Deep V up front isn't such a bad idea either as it is more aerodynamic and only 55 grams more than Fusion.
I have built the Deep V front and rear black 105 combination on more than a few occasions. See:

You can get some ideas of weights and what they look like.
If you want more pictures contact me and I can provide.

I was thinking 14/17/14 spokes up front since the fusion is pretty stiff and I'll have 36 spokes. The rear I was going to go 14/17/14 non-drive and 14/15/14 drive side just because that side usually takes more stress due to higher tensions. Of course the deep V should reduce the chance of the spokes going temporairly slack during hard bumps due to it's stiffness (preventing spoke thread loosening over time )

I like the idea of doing a 2:1 ratio also (G3 pattern) as mentioned in that website you provided the link for.

Do you have any more pics of the complete wheels?

Your prices aren't bad at all and I've seen your wheels on Ebay something like 6 months ago when you were selling 32 spoke aeroheads/ultegras and 36 spoke open pro/105s. (I think that was you)

Guys,

Thanks for the discussion, it has opened my eyes to some better value wheel options. I was considering the Shimano WH-600 Ultegra wheelset, now I can see them as maybe not the best wheel for the next bike.

Assuming that I used a 36 (14/15/14 butted) spoke Deep V for the rear.

I guess I could build the front a few different ways.

1. Keep the Deep V, but use 36 thinner spokes (sapim cx-rays would be pretty nice, but probably too expensive for a wheelset like this)

2. Switch to a fusion rim (36 spokes- not sure about the guage or type)

3. Drop spoke count down to 28 and use a Niobium 30mm rim (465 grams). Speedcific doesn't make any drilling higher than 28.

The reason I'm doing this is because I'll be riding a pretty stiff bike as it is and I don't want or need to overbuild the front. ( think vibration through the handlebars)
