Romain Bardet (Ag2r La Mondiale) raced to victory in stage 5 of the Critérium du Dauphiné Thursday.
The stage, which traced the same route as stage 17 in the upcoming Tour de France, took the peloton 161 kilometers from Digne-les-Bains to Pra Loup and contained five categorized climbs.
American Tejay van Garderen (BMC Racing) was second at 35 seconds back, while Chris Froome (Sky) placed third at 40 seconds.
Van Garderen is now the race leader, holding a 17-second advantage over Benat Intxausti (Movistar) and a 20-second lead over Bardet.
The Dauphine continues with Friday’s stage 6, which measures 183km in length.
