Fort Lewis College and King University won the division 1 and 2 team omnium titles, respectively, at the 2015 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships, which concluded Sunday at Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia.
Going into the final day, Brevard College led the division 1 standings, but a team relay and dual slalom victory on Sunday launched Colorado’s Fort Lewis into the top spot as competition wrapped up. King University, based in Tennessee, also won with a late surge on Sunday, overcoming Warren Wilson College’s lead with a win in the morning’s team relay.

Sunday
Racers faced cold and windy weather, as well as heavy fog, for the coed team relays. Fort Lewis beat our Marian and Brevard for the D1 team relay title while King University continued its dominating weekend with a win over Western State Colorado University and Warren Wilson College in D2.
In the dual slalom, Kristen Bob (Marian University) beat out Adrian Sanders (Lindsey Wilson College) for the gold medal in the D1 women’s dual slalom while Shayona Glynn (Marian University) bested Heather Collman (Lindsey Wilson College) for the bronze. In D2, Josie Ritchie (Mars Hill University) was the most skilled on the dual slalom course. She beat out King University’s Kaysee Armstrong in the gold medal match-up while Emily Oppliger (Michigan Technological University) won against Sara Schneider (Humboldt State University) for third place.
In the men’s D1 dual slalom event, Zach Graveson (Fort Lewis College) took the win ahead of Phillip Kmetz (Lees-McRae College) while Alec Bob (Marian University) collected the bronze medal. Daniel Frentzel (Western State Colorado University) won the men’s D2 dual slalom final against Bo Hellams (Humboldt State University). James Averill (Western State Colorado University) was third.
Saturday
In the men’s D1 cross-country race, Sepp Kuss (University of Colorado) stormed to the front during lap one and developed a lead that he kept to the finish. The Colorado rider crossed the finish line a little more than a minute ahead of silver and bronze medalists Kyle Trudeau (University of Arizona) and Luke Vrouwenvelder (University of North Carolina). In the D2 race, Robert Rimmer (King University) took his second national title in as many days. Benjamin Senkerik (Ripon College) was second and Peter Noon (Western State Colorado University) collected the bronze, about four minutes off the winning pace.
Hannah Finchamp (Lindenwood University) improved on her third place finish from Friday’s short track when she crossed the finish line in the women’s D1 XC with more than two minutes to spare. Coryn Rivera (Marian University) and Emily Shields (University of North Carolina) were second and third, respectively. Kaysee Armstrong (King University) claimed the D2 title ahead of Allison Jones (Warren Wilson College) and Katherine Shields (Wake Forest University).
In D1 downhill, Phillip Kmetz (Lees-McRae College) rode the fastest time of the day, 3:56.9. Kyle Grau (Brevard College) and Dakotah Norton (Lindsey Wilson College) rounded out the podium in second and third, respectively. In the D2 men, Ryan Burney (Wentworth Institute of Technology) won the stars-and-stripes jersey just seconds faster than his teammate, Ian Turner. Daniel Frentzel (Western State Colorado) took the bronze medal.
In the women’s downhill, Rebecca Gardner (Fort Lewis College) won the D1 race with a time of 5:01.6, ahead of Angelina Palermo (Marian University) and Sofia Gomez Villafane (Fort Lewis College). The D2 women’s title went to Alison Osgood (Humboldt State University) who was the fastest woman of the day with a time of 4:57.1. Ariana Altier (California State University-Chico) and Sarah Schneider (Humboldt State University) were second and third, in that order.
Friday
The men’s D1 short track blew apart quickly as a lead group of five formed from the field of 80. Kyle Trudeau (University of Arizona), Richard Cypress Gorry (Brevard College), Matthew Clements (Lees-McRae College), Stephan Davoust (Fort Lewis College), and Luke Vrouwenvelder (University of North Carolina) controlled the race from the front. Vrouwenvelder won the sprint at the line, beating out Gorry and Davoust who collected the silver and bronze medals.
The D2 men’s short track was a tactical race, and it was Robert Rimmer (King University) who won the day ahead of second- and third-place finishers Benjamin Senkerik (Ripon College) and Cameron Smith (Western State Colorado University).
The women’ s D1 short track split apart quickly thanks to the efforts of Coryn Rivera (Marian University), Emily Shields (University of North Carolina), and Hannah Finchamp (Lindenwood University). Rivera out-sprinted Shields for the victory, while Finchamp crossed the line in third. Kaysee Armstrong (King University) won the D2 women’s race ahead of Allison Jones (Warren Wilson College) and Katherine Shields (Wake Forest University).
Individual Omnium
Sofia Gomez Villafane (Fort Lewis College) and Luke Vrouwenvelder (University of North Carolina) won the D1 overall individual titles, and Kaysee Armstrong (King University) and Robert Rimmer (King University) were the top D2 racers over the course of the weekend.
