Two-time Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong will come out of retirement, starting her 2015 season at the Pan Am Continental Championships individual time trial in early May, marking a return to the American national team after a three-year hiatus.
“I am honored to have been selected as a member of the U.S. Pan American Championship team and am thrilled to be representing team USA in my first race back,” she said in a USA Cycling press statement. “Let the journey begin!”
Armstrong, 41, ended her professional career on a high note, successfully defending her Olympic time trial title in London. However, last fall, at the Interbike trade show, she hinted that she may pin on a number again, and the news of her inclusion on the Pan Am team confirms those intentions.
Carmen Small, who is one of Armstrong’s teammates with the Twenty16-Sho-Air outfit, will also race the TT at Pan Am Championships, held May 5-10 in Leon, Mexico.
“We have a tremendous team,” said Jim Miller, vice president of athletics for USA Cycling. “And Kristin’s return to team USA strengthens our medal potential in Mexico.”
The U.S. roster for the women’s Pan Am road race includes: Lauren Hall (Twenty16-Sho-Air), Coryn Rivera (UnitedHealthcare), and Small.
