COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced Tuesday that cyclist Kyle Schmidt, of Ogema, Wisconsin, has accepted a two-year sanction for an anti-doping rule violation stemming from an investigation into the online trafficking of prohibited substances.
Schmidt, 40, admitted to the use, attempted use, and possession of synthetic erythropoietin (EPO) which he obtained through two separate websites between March, 2010 and January, 2013. EPO is a substance in the class of peptide hormones and growth factors prohibited under the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing and the International Cycling Union (UCI) Anti-Doping Rules, both of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List.
Schmidt’s period of ineligibility began on October 13, 2014, the date he accepted the sanction. In addition, Schmidt has been disqualified from all competitive results obtained on and subsequent to March 1, 2010, the date he first admitted to making online purchases of prohibited substances, including forfeiture of any medals, points, and prizes.
Schmidt’s anti-doping rule violation was uncovered during USADA’s investigation into the Anemia Patient Group website and is the second sanction to result from the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and may result in additional cases being brought against others.
