Vincenzo Nibali may have missed the mark in France this past July, but the 2014 Tour champ is closing out the season in fine form, soloing to an emphatic victory in the Tre Valli Varesine one-day race Wednesday. It was his second win this month after claiming Coppa Bernocchi two weeks ago.
The Italian delivered a blistering counterattack in the final four kilometers of racing after his Astana team reeled in Southeast’s Andrea Fedi. Nibali rode clear to victory at the end of the 198.5km race, which finished with circuits around Varese, Italy. “I have to thank my teammates for this success,” said Nibali.
RusVelo’s Sergey Firsanov sprinted home to second place ahead of Trek’s Giacomo Nizzolo.
Nibali will continue his fall campaign at Il Lombardia on Sunday, also in Italy, which has a hilly course that should favor the Italian national champion.
