Gibson | <a href="http://www.cbgphoto.com">www.cbgphoto.com</a></p></figure><p>Brent Bookwalter took the flowers and the yellow jersey at the end of the USA Pro Challenge’s stage 2, making it two in a row for his BMC Racing squad. On the other side of the coin, it was heartbreak for Nate Brown (Cannondale-Garmin), who made the early break, attacked alone on the final climb to Arapahoe basin, but was caught in the last kilometer. BMC’s Rohan Dennis was the undertaker, riding a savage pace to catch Brown and set up Bookwalter for the win.</p>
<p>“To be honest I wasn’t sure I’d won,” said Bookwalter. “I was following Rohan’s wheel, and with 500 meters to go, I caught my breath, chucked it into the big ring, and gave everything I had to line, going for seconds. There was no time to celebrate.”</p>

<p></br><br />The early breakaway of 12 riders was pared down to nine by the time they crested the second categorized climb of the day, Ute Pass.</p>
<p>Coming through Dillon, with less than 12 miles to race, Greg Daniel (Axeon) and Nate Brown (Cannondale-Garmin) attacked the break, which was about two minutes ahead of the peloton. Inside of the final five miles, Brown attacked alone. The remnants of the break were caught, and the peloton was 2:16 behind.</p>
<p>As the road climbed to Arapahoe Basin, Calvin Watson (Trek Factory Racing) attacked out of the peloton. However, he was soon caught, and Janier Acevedo (Cannondale-Garmin) counter-attacked, but that was also short-lived. Behind, race leader Taylor Phinney (BMC) was dropped.</p>
<p>With two miles left, Brown’s lead on the peloton had fallen to 1:21. With one kilometer to go, he was only 15 seconds up the road as Dennis drove the pace on the front of the chase.</p>
<p>Soon, the catch was made, with 700 meters left. Bookwalter attacked in the final 300 meters and drove home to the line for a win and the yellow jersey. It was his first individual victory in over two years. Dennis rode home to second, making it another double-podium day for BMC. Hugh Carthy (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) finished third.</p>
<p>“It was brutal out there,” said Brown. “Came up a K short, but that’s racing. … I knew we had to go — you might as well go and give it a shot.”</p>
<p>Wednesday’s stage 3 should be another trying day of climbing, although not a summit finish, as the race runs 101 miles from Copper Mountain Resort to Aspen, over the fearsome Independence Pass KOM, 20 miles from the end.</p>
<p>“Especially after Utah, [Bookwalter] got so many second places and yesterday third. It’s great to see him finally pull off a win,” said Dennis. “I kept going until I blew basically. It’s a good sign.”</p>
