I'd prefer the chance of cooler weather. Some parts of the
walk have very little in the way of cover.

I can't comment on how things are now but there isn't a huge
amount of settlement on the route of the actual path, although
it's sufficiently evenly spaced to make B&B plausible. There's
a pub at Wallhouses. Acomb is just off the route. Hotel and
YH at Once Brewed. More houses at Greenhead and after
that you're into the Carlisle hinterland. I'd say it was quite
possible to do it that way and booking ahead you'll at least
know where you'll be each night.

You'd have to get the train to Carlisle the night before.
Overnight in Carlisle then take bus from Carlisle to Bowness-
on-Solway the next morning and walk back. This is a perfectly
reasonable in a day and if you stay in the same accomodation in
Carlisle on consecutive nights means you start the walk with a
light bag, having left most of your kit at your accomodation, to
which you return at the end of the day.
