A new spamming tactic has been discovered on another forum I mod on, spammers are now sending links to malicious sites via the PM feature. Similar to phishing e-mail messages from scammers looking to steal personal information, the message warns of some dire consequences for not responding and instructs the recipient to click on a link to a malicious site that could give you a virus.

If you get one of these, please let one of us know right away. DO NOT click on any links in the message.

Hi Cyberlegend1994,
First of all Thanks for warn us about this kind of PM. If anybody has more idea on this topic, please post it here.

Here's an example of such a message:

Dear (multiple user names),

A virus alert was noticed on your computer.
We highly recommend you to check your computer and perform online virus check at our site immediately:
http: //antivirus.effectmeds.com/(multiple user names)
----------------------------------------------------
Sincerely, Forum Administration (name of forum)

These will generally use a generic or spoofed user name that mimics that of a mod or an admin. Some of the names used were LadyModerator, LadyXAdmin, GooDFriend, LadyAdministrator, Miilena926, Sannder896, and Swabsroaxdola.

Again, if you get one of these, DO NOT click the link. Use the triangle button to report the message to one of us right away.
