I'm still a HUGE fan of the 1911. I own one and "ship" it with me whenever
circumstances warrant. Ma deuce and the 1911 both continue to generate a
huge fan club. Tried and true. Nothing fancy. I had a Glock 9 mil for awhile
but extractor problems and double feeds put that thing back in the armory.
Plus..... I just don't like dark black plastic.

As for lions vs. dog? Never been around lions but I doubt I'd shoot one
unless it wouldn't go away.

I have a 9mm, 38 Special, & 380 Auto, I've carried them all on by bicycle, I
personally prefer the 38 Special Revolver because of it's light weight,
small size and dependability, but don't expect to ever run into hard core
drug users or gang members where I ride.

Glocks are decent weapons but, in my experience, they have some drawbacks.
It's not known for it's accuracy (you can't adjust it) and I'm not a fan of
long pull double actions. Their half [censored] safety feature makes me nervous.
If I was looking for a lightweight weapon to put into a back pack though? An
H&K USP40 (.40 cal) would take care of most 2 or 4-legged varmints. You're
not going to drive any nails with it but it's reliable and pretty durable.

If I was going to keep a weapon around the house to take care of critters it
would more likely be a 12-gauge pump gun loaded with 00 buck.

I've still got my Ruger Security Six 357. Yep it's a wheel gun,
but is a solid weapon after all these years. Not prone to jam... :-)

that'll work mate! cool beans. generally, those cats are looking for
rabbits and other small game. noise, lights, and smell keep them away. A
deer is a tall order for a couger. But they can take them down. A young
buck may be a tall order....

I agree that they are beautiful. I think CA has a different problem as
many of the attacks are during the day. Fortunately there's enough deer
and elk here for them to be happy and I doubt I will ever have a
problem. In my searches, it likes like about two dog kills a year are
reported.

I thought it was interesting also. I don't pretend to be knowledgeable about
wildlife management. I do have a knee jerk aversion to trophy hunting of
large predators so its good to be exposed to reasonable arguments from all
perspectives.

I used to paint houses and there was a GC we used to do a lot of work
for. There was a few occasions I had to go over to house to pick up
something from his home office. Everytime I walked into his office I
wanted to kick his ass -- there wasn't on wall or corner of the room that
wasn't filled with stuffed animals. What made it worse was he was a
Christian brother and it just [censored] me off to no end that he couldn't
understand that he was disrespecting God's creation and thereby
dishonoring God.

Good thing we never got so mad at each other it came down to throwing
punches -- he was pretty big and probably would've killed me.
