Isn't the difficulty here that the experts don't know from when the Mayan calendar is dated ie. 2012 was a guestimate by the experts (not the Mayans)? I wouldnt disparage the theories of those ancient civilisations.
Nah, the difficulty was in misinterpreting the end of their long cycle (b'ak'tun) as an end of time. It's analogous to someone misinterpreting the end of our Gregorian calendar as the end of time. Why didn't the Maya construct another b'ak'tun? Well, they were conquered by the Spanish. The few Maya that live today thought all the hubbub was ridiculous.
