New bike path opens 1.2km of riverside to public

25/6/06

The long-awaited shared recreational path along the river foreshore between Banks Reserve in Mount Lawley and Bardon Park, Maylands was officially opened today.

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the path filled a vital gap in the Perth Bicycle Network by providing a safe, continuous route from Tonkin Highway to the Perth CBD and beyond.

"This path opens up a previously hard-to-access, though beautiful, tract of the Swan River to cyclists, pedestrians, families and others who want to enjoy the attractive wetlands," Ms MacTiernan said.

"The path project was one of the most challenging undertaken as part of the Perth Bicycle Network program.

"The environmental and Aboriginal heritage values of the area and the interests of nearby residents have all been incorporated in its design and construction."

The Minister said the 1.2km path, which cost $2,881,000, was funded by the Government through the Department for Planning and Infrastructure (DPI), with contributions of $400,000 from the Western Australian Planning Commission and $131,000 from the City of Bayswater.

"The City of Bayswater, Town of Vincent, Department of Environment, the Swan River Trust and local community groups worked with DPI to ensure the project's success," Ms MacTiernan said.

"Since coming to office in 2001, the Government has spent more than $72million on cycling facilities and delivered more than 360km of cycling networks across the State.

"This year, the DPI, Main Roads WA and the Public Transport Authority will spend $7.1million on cycling infrastructure."

Fortunately I know live in Canberra. Now this is the Cycling Capital of Australia. Big wide bike lanes, bike friendly laws, drivers who are friendly and considerate and lots of great hills and scenery. What more could you ask for?
I can think of a few things...most would get me into trouble though. :D

Afer living in sydney for 30years and now living in perth for one month i can see why perth is so good for riding. One example is I ride to work 3 days perth week. I leave my front door head around joondaloop lkake on the bike path and straight to the city on bike paths it is just so safe and easy. I am really loving it. Except for the punctures

Chris
Hey you know the section of path from Gribble Rd in Gwelup, to Karrinyup Rd (there is a trotting track on the side) well, for years it had concrete pavers which were lifted at the edges, they fixed each gap with a huge strip of bitumen so they were like speed humps...and there were lots of them.
One guy at work reckons he broke 3 frames.
This is now like a racetrack. You should have seen it before, you would not have believed it. I rode on that rubbish for years....
Think of the (unimproved) section from Karrinyup Rd to the Freeway overpass, and multiply it by a factor of 10.
Punctures: Try Specialised All Condition tyres, they have Kevlar belt...also I find the rubber compound doesn't seem to like glass shards i.e. checking for glass twice per week, don't find much at all compared to other tyres. And make sure you have them at 110 psi at least so you don't get pinch flats.

That new section is so good, except it started raining there yesterday morning and got soaked. Only been fix for 4 weeks.

Puntures ,now running conti gator's only had one in 4 weeks.

I heard the rains are meant to be coming. ( I think it's funny weather been so good since i moved here)

make that two punctures
You must be praying in the wrong direction. I've had no punctures this year. Normally I average 5 per year.

Can we do a polie exchange, swap some NSW ones for some WA ones ?

we just had the winter solstice, which means of course the hours of daylight get progressively longer, however apparently the weather won't be getting better right away.
Hey one night I was passed by a guy and girl on a Tandem, they drew away like a Subaru WRX (almost)...
I held their wheel until Warwick Station but they were far too quick.
The guy could corner on that monster better than me on my normal bike!!! he was awesome

They are very hard to keep up with, I ride with them quite often. Nice couple. I understand the husband is a very strong time trialer
