New bike path opens 1.2km of riverside to public
25/6/06
The long-awaited shared recreational path along the river foreshore between Banks Reserve in Mount Lawley and Bardon Park, Maylands was officially opened today.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the path filled a vital gap in the Perth Bicycle Network by providing a safe, continuous route from Tonkin Highway to the Perth CBD and beyond.
"This path opens up a previously hard-to-access, though beautiful, tract of the Swan River to cyclists, pedestrians, families and others who want to enjoy the attractive wetlands," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The path project was one of the most challenging undertaken as part of the Perth Bicycle Network program.
"The environmental and Aboriginal heritage values of the area and the interests of nearby residents have all been incorporated in its design and construction."
The Minister said the 1.2km path, which cost $2,881,000, was funded by the Government through the Department for Planning and Infrastructure (DPI), with contributions of $400,000 from the Western Australian Planning Commission and $131,000 from the City of Bayswater.
"The City of Bayswater, Town of Vincent, Department of Environment, the Swan River Trust and local community groups worked with DPI to ensure the project's success," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Since coming to office in 2001, the Government has spent more than $72million on cycling facilities and delivered more than 360km of cycling networks across the State.
"This year, the DPI, Main Roads WA and the Public Transport Authority will spend $7.1million on cycling infrastructure."
