Ironman used to make a "Hybrid" model which was supposed to be a
multi-purpose one like you are looking for but I'm not sure if they
still do (it's not listed on their website:
www.ironmanwetsuits.com
) It was also quite expensive (similar price to a specfically designed
swimming one).
It seems to me that "swimming" wetsuits are signifcantly more expensive
than "general purpose" wetsuits. So another option would be to get a
reasonably priced "general purpose" one then look for a special deal,
end of range or second hand "swimming" one to keep costs down.
A long-john style (sleeveless, long legs) would probably be the most
versatile but a full swimming wetsuit with sleeves defintely increases
the warmth factor significantly and therefore extends your open water
swimming season.
