What are the best anti-theft tricks around?

A good chain and take your seat with you....If someone really want your bike they will just get some bolt cutters...but if your bike looks unattractive...(no seat) ...then a potential thif may nick one with a seat

Hi all (new here)

Don't know if this is the best, but this is what I did:

I hate the hassle of taking the "quick release" front wheel off every time I lock the bike up somewhere (short term) or going to the extra hassle of locking it up too every time.

Converting to standard nuts is not do-able.

So I figured out that if I replaced the allen head screw holding the disc brake on with a "homemade" thumb screw with a hole drilled in it I could put a small 1'' case hardened padlock through the opening in the quick release lever and the thumb screw hole, which then locks the wheel on the bike at all times. (I had to make my own thumb screw out of a metric bolt, because there are no metric thumb screws available)

The best things you can do are to loosen up your quick releases (and lock up your bike). Anyone trying to make a quick getaway will just fall off the bike.
And if your in the city, take your wheels with you. Anyone will probably try to say something to the cop on the corner when a guy is trying to run away with a bike with no wheels.

I doubt this one though. :p

haha here's a good couple..
add a sram powerlink into your chain and leave it undone or take your chain with you.
or leave your bike in the hardest gear possible. this way they take a while to get going and you have more chance catching them before they get away. both sound stupid but both work

I am getting a new £199 bike tomorrow and i will just get it insured and triple lock it should I need to, I doubt I will leave it outside though.

I sometimes shift both front and rear derailleurs so that when they take off the chain will drop which will often cause a crash or at least slow them down. The only problem is when you forget that you have done this.

Last spring, riding around downtown, I talked to a bikecop.
He asked me about my bike. I told him I bought it at a pawn shop.

The cop told me he has seen stolen police department bikes at some of the pawn shops!

HAHA your kidding!! I wonder how the pawn shop gets away with that?

The best way to keep the thieves away from your bike is to look it in your car. All the other methods are pretty useless since a skilled thief can remove any of them in a matter of seconds.

It’s good to see some of you keeping up a happy front on stolen bikes, & making fun of the police. But I’m afraid it’s not a laughing matter. Did you know that over 100,000 bikes are stolen every year? & a large amount of these bikes cost over four grand each. If you can add the figures up it might not seem quite so funny & if you insure your bike do you complain at the cost of the insurance? I am not having a go at anyone but a lot of us have to work our socks off to save the money to buy the bike we want, & just about all of the people who has had a bike stolen do not find it very funny.
Kind regards
Steve

I just had a brilliant idea, then another one. First one, take a crank off, and stick it in your back pack or just carry it, they're not that big. Second, loosen your stem. Ride that thief. I guess they could walk it, but they'd have to hold the front up, so I could catch them and wack them with the crank :D

In the small town I live that is not a problem. My suggestion: move to a small town! Backroads are easier to reach, people is usually very friendly and you can still use a common lock, although it can be a little insulting to locals.

loosening the stem would be a laugh... But this IS liberalsville USA, you can't intend to harm some dirty rotten thieving scumbag - his lawyer would sue you for millions.

Hook up a tazer to the bars... Spear gun in the seatpost or if you have a quick release, just remove the skewer and attach some fake nuts with double sided sticky tape....

I'm going to go with..........a closed locked garage or inside the house or being on it whenever they're not in one of the other 2 places. I never leave any of them unattended. I want them more than those who would take them.

I recently went to the site (http://canada-rx-drugs.com/?ref_id=6515) and was pleasantly surprised by the presented products, all very easy and simple, I recommend Viagra and Cialis, you will not regret;)
