I am 16 years old and have just recently begun cycling, and plan in far future to begin competeing. Right now i own an 2006 model Trek A-100 road bike; No clipless pedals, no riding shoes, bike attire, or even a good water bottle. What do I need to be a competitive rider in local races, and how cheap can i get away with it while still being competative?

what you need is a good education:
Hit eBay/Craigslist for some used books on beginning racing; ask at your local shops for any grouprides where you could tag along as a newbie, and then ask lots-o-questions there. You can pick up gear second-hand once you have a better idea of what you want.

There's a steep learning curve when you start racing, but it's really worth it :)

^^^ That's my kind of answer.
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach him to fish, and he'll feed himself for a lifetime - a quote from someone wiser than I...

Really, to be competitive all you need is a bike. Train hard and rest hard, repeat...
