    Touch wood...

I don't intend to crack my hips in an accident anytime soon.

Having a HELMET MIRROR has saved me from getting knocked off more than once - which will mean nothing to you...but it'll mean something to someone who has been knocked off and to the next person who gets knocked off(who could be you!! ) by a scummy driver who doesn't see them.

doesn't looking behind you and listening for traffic work as well as a tiny mirror with limited field of view?

I'd have to say buzz kill bar stops are the most wastefull. They add weight and do nothing that decent equipment else where can't do better. I'd ask to have them removed and standard cromed plastic ones added simply so I don't feel stupid for riding with them.

I think many of the products mentioned using materials science to extract some sort of an advantage is fine. Yes they are expensive, but some people have the money and percieve what ever the advantage worth the cost to them. If you are going to be against all technology because you don't need it, then trade in your butted steel bike with gears for a straight gauge single speed with wood rims. I bet the pros back in the 50s road those things faster and further than many people in here do today.

If you want a lotus, and can afford a lotus, buy a lotus. If you don't want one then don't complain because somebody else does.

I use a mirror and as you get adjusted to them, I think they are a +1 for avoiding a hit. You can see vehicles coming long before you here them and I like to size up what's coming before it's on me. I would say for the 12 bucks I paid for it, it gives me a bit more comfort. It's also good to be able to call out ahead of time in group rides if your pickin' up the rear (that's me).:)

Listening to traffic is not nearly as good as being able to see whats coming.
There is a very wide field of view with a helmet mirror as its so close to one's eye.
There has been about 4 times in recent years when having it has saved my bacon....
As the previous poster has said they're excellent for alerting the bunch of another group catching us(racing), or a vehicle behind too.
I also like it when I'm out training and a guy will be trying to catch me thinking I can't see him and at the last few metres I'll hit the power and take off from him = fun(and frustration for them!):) .

I'm the guy who keeps buying them when they show up on eBay. I suppose that they really didn't improve anyones cycling, but for some reason I don't get sore knees while using them like I do with perfectly round chainrings.
