I have searched till I'm purple!!!!!!! and can't find the significance of a TPI rating, say of: 66 vs 220. What does this rating have to do with a tire purchase?

TPI = Threads Per Inch.

The higher the number (thread count) the smoother the ride.

ewitz------are you sure it's not just the opposite? I just called pricepoint.com and ordered a set of tires with a TPI of 66 - specifically because the salesguy told me that the lower the TPI the softer the ride. The higher the TPI the faster the tire at full pressure.
