What should I buy? Under $500.

Hi - 'fraid I can't offer any advice myself but I'd be really keen to hear what people think of these bikes aswell. I'm contemplating a new bike at the mo. (aiming for next month but imminent 'new bike joy' is making it hard to wait beyond next weekend!) and having had a chat with the chap at LBS I'm thinking of the Cypress SE (ladies), for a within budget bike suitable for commuting on roads/pavements/cobbles with a view to getting out to do some longer distance stuff over the summer, any thoughts/feedback would be much appreciated...

How about a used bike? You can get a great bike cheaply that way and just get a tuneup at your LBS.

I got my Klein off of craigslist for $350. It was $1k new.

Agree with lumpy. If you have the time to research what's available used and find a good-fitting bike, you can 2x or 3x the quality/performance at this price range (~$500) EASILY.
