Since i am in the market for a bike, i'd like to spend only $400-$500 but I will probably end up opting for a higher spec'd bike between $800-$999. I have a few questions.

1.What sort of deals do the local bike shops give?
2.Is it worth buying from a dealer outside of your area, if the price is right?

For example, if the bike retails for $950, would it be the norm for the bike shop to sweeten the deal by throwing in a helmet, lock and water bottle and cage?

Or do they just discount the bike to $800 from $950???

3. Does christmas often bring Xmas specials??? Should i wait for that, or try to do a deal now?

4.What is a great value priced helmet?
5.What is the prefered bike lock to use?

Thanks in advance.:D

at the moment im leaning towards the Giant Innova 2005 model because it has upgraded from 2004 to disc brakes.

but i also thinkn that MTBs seem to be a bit cheaper for similar specs?

so im still tossing and turning.

any pointers.

Hybrids are great for riding gently. If you want to go fast, then get something lighter, and less upright. Giant's CRX range has two bikes under (or just on) $1K. Fast hybrids, flat bar road bikes, whatever. No disks - which are only useful in riding in sloppy or dusty conditions. Some of the Marin hybrids are good too. Specialised Sirrus? Trek 1200?

What about the Giant Iguana MTB - good spec. You can put skinny tyres on it to make it go faster on the road.

M "Yay! You can get a decent touring bike again!" H

You don't say whereabouts you are. I'm in Melb and just got an 04 Giant OCR3 for AU$999 The 05 OCR3 has carbon forks instead of alloy, which is nice and it's the same price. I'm personally pretty happy, but then I don't have anything to compare it with.

I cant believe its so hard to buy a bike?

Mountain bikes of similar specs to the Giant Innova (A$950) hybrid seem to be a few hundred dollars cheaper. ie the Giant Yukon ($699),Diamondback (A$599) Mongoose Tyax Elite (A$599).

Im stuffed, the more time i spend at a shop the more confused i get??
