What type of bike would be good for road cycling and general cycling at uni?

Hi i am going to uni this year and will need a general bike for cycling round the town. i would also like it to use it for road cycling as well. i was wondering what type of bike i would need or what frame and types of wheels i would need. i would also like it not to be too expensive. thanks

You will no doubt get a lot of varying recommendations regarding bike alternatives. But for my 2 cents worth, I think you should consider something like a Kogswell set up porteur-style with a front rack & 650b wheels/tires. For instance, something like this:

You will get comfort, load-carrying capacity, and a sharp-looking bike!
