What type of shoes can I purchase for these pedals? Do I need to get an adapter for shoes to fit on these pedals?

You can use the 4-bolt pattern for your Speedplay cleats with some road shoes or use the base plate adapter that translates the 4-bolt Speedplay cleat pattern to the 3-bolt pattern found on many road shoes.

When mounting the adapter plates, follow the directions carefully. You want to use the shims that give a perfectly flat mounting surface for the cleat after you've bolted down the plates.
