  1. Do you replace your tire at the first sign of wear? Should this tire be thrown out? My last rear Pro3 had scuffs all over it before I decided to replace it, but that's because I was not aware of the scuffs as I never used to look at the tire.

  2. I suppose you could get 5000 miles out of it or you could get 10yds. That's equally true if you put a new tyre on! Given the cost of a new one though is it really worth increasing your chances of a puncture? It looks like that one has worn through the rubber. How about using it on the turbo and keep a decent set on the bike?

Excessive wear is probably subjective & varies with tire type -- a 'Hybrid' tire (e.g., 700x42) will probably last forever ... a 'racing' tire may only last a couple of thousand miles.

Since the tread & sidewalls protect the casing, if the sidewalls are CRACKED due to age OR if you notice a FLAT RIDGE down the center of the tread when the tire is deflated, then you should probably stop using them on the road ... but, you can get more mileage from them if you use them on the spare wheelthat you use on your trainer.

A scuffed sidewall, itself, should not be a problem UNLESS you notice that the sidewall has deformed/bulged/cracked.

  4. When my tyres look like that, and I have a replacement handy, I throw the worn tyre out. If I don't have a replacement, I order one and keep riding on the old tyre in the interim. It's likely to be good for a few more hundred km. I wouldn't keep riding until it is like that all the way around.
