Where are you from, what do you do?

This is CJ from Palm Harbor, FL. I am a newbie here that is really enjoying the site so far.

I'm a merchant mariner by trade by a procyclist in my mind like so manmy of us out here, LOL! I have to get Phil Ligget to stop announcing my name as I ride, especially since I am the only one that can hear it!

39 y.o., male on the verge of 40 in December (yep now you have to send me a card dang-nabbit!). New Jersey by birth, Floridian by Lat./Lon. Wannabe personal trainer. Lover of hiking: Completer of 37 of the 50 state high points & all of the Catskill 3500 Club requirements. I dig National Parks, sunsets, friendly animals and a decent cup of peppermint tea. I am free of caffiene (including chocolate), alcohol, drugs & red meat.

On the serious side (which I seldom am), I am also enjoying a rebuild project. My current one is a 1989 Kestrel 4000 (Gray Graphics). My restoration goal is to have the completed bike EXACTLY as it was when it rolled out of B&L BIke & Sport in Kailua Kona Hawaii on May 9, 1989.

HELP!!! I am struggling to find several items.
170 mm Shimano Sante Cranks
1" Shimano Sante Headset
1 Mavic Open 4 CD rim - 36 hole
Hoshi Spokes (I have been told that the length I need is 280mm)

The pedals: What was originally on the bike was a pair of LOOK pedals, but I need help here with the model # or name. They were white with a red "hinge (White lettering on the hinge)" & plastic end cap... Oh! I think they were called P166. Does that sound familiar to anyone? ALL Items sought need to be MINT, N.O.S.

Well that should tell you what type of person I am, but why would I want to build this bike?

It was built by B&L Bike & Sport owner & Ironman Bike Director Nick Rott who was killed while on a training ride on the Big Island of Hawaii in August of 1994 (I didn't find out until November because I had moved back to the east coast). He & I were good friends and when I found out about his death I immediately retired the bike. There isn't a day that goes by that somehow I don't think about him or use something that he sold me. From Bike Cases to Wheel Safes to nearly ALL of my shop tools. I have owned three Kestrels in my 20 years of triathlons & cycling and even my back up bikes were from his shop.

Now, I am rebuilding the Kestrel 4000... Actually for the past 8 years I have been rebuilding it. Thanks to Ebay and Vecchio's Bicicletteria of Boulder, CO things have really begun to take shape. Perhaps someone out there could help me out a bit more. I have a complete parts list (with both what I have and what I need) that I can send out if interested. Let me know. Be Safe! - CJ

Hello! My name is Jerrie L. Roy. I am from Lufkin,Texas!
I love cycling but can't afford to buy a bike right now. My husband and I used to ride bikes every morning. I am praying for two mountain bikes. The Dr. told him:) it would be good for his bad knees and also we kept the belly fat off. I hope to get back to cycling for fun and weight loss. [email protected]

Hi from Hobart. I have been doing up old bikes found at the rubbish tip for the last 2 years. Not any old rubbish (well, I collected more than a few just for some parts); my first project was a 70's Schwinn racer, next a 80's Standish racer. This year good mountain bikes started to appear so my current main ride is a 3 chainring front/sturmeyArcher rear mtb commuter that is the closest to perfect for my needs so far. Currently building a mtb racer, and love the cycling and tinkering. I am up to a **cassette hub** in the rubbish stakes, now waiting for the some carbon fibre wonders to appear!

Hi my name is Rob, I live in Woking, which is about half hour from Central London by train. I currently own a Specialized Allez Comp '05, which I use for commuting on, and I have a Specialized Tarmac Expert which I am using for longer weekend rides.

I work for a mailorder cmapny that specialises in running, it's not that great but it keeps the bank manager off my back-lol!

Hello all.
I am originally from the United States. I guess so. Some of my ancestors practically founded the place. I teach English to speakers of other languages.

My main mode of cycling is long distance touring. I have cycled about 31,600 miles through nineteen countries. In my opinion long distance bicycle touring is about the coolest thing anybody can do. I love it. I have crossed the USA six times, three-and-a-half times on the southern tier.

I have always used touring bikes.

Nowadays I am living in the People's Republic of China where I am teaching at a college. I taught writing for academic purposes at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing. Now I am teaching general and conversational English.

I am an almost 56 yr.old man who recently quit smoking and decided to take up cycling. I live in southern Illinois. I cycled several years ago but quit for various reasons. I have a question for you experienced cyclists. I have a Peugeot Crazy Horse mountain bike. To tell you the truth, I don't remember if it has 12 or 15 speeds. (I've tried to find it on the internet, but haven't had any luck.)

My question: "Is this a good bike to start cycling with or would a road bike be better?" Any replies are greatly appreciated.

People tour on all kinds of bikes. I have seen mountain bikes, racing bikes, road bikes, and hybrids all used for touring.

My opinion is this. If you want to tour long distance use a touring bike. If you are just going on weekends now and then just about anything will do, and certainly the mountain bike should be sufficient.

Hi, I'm 49er (born that is) and still preparing for the battle that you may have won (quitting) - well done. Any bike will do for starters, I think it is more important that the bike works properly, is tuned well, and fits you correctly. Correct fit take some experimenting to get right, do it on the bike you have and later you will know better which bike to get next. There is nothing more off-putting than having a poorly tuned bike, for example tyres at too low pressure; brakes rubbing or not working properly; chain not oiled; these will wear you out and make cycling double the effort. Start with small rides and/or take your time until you feel more confident and physically accustomed to riding. Good luck!

Hello, I from Texas. I am a 45 year old physician and started cycling in July 06 for recreation and fitness. I ride about 50 - 70 miles per week, mostly on the weekends. Bought a Trek 2300 on Ebay to get started. I am really enjoying riding at this time. Working on endurance and maintaining a good cadence and HR around 140 - 150.

Love it site and forum.

From Melbourne, Australia... glad to be aboard.

Been riding since I was about 10... I love this sport - what else can I say!

Hi all. I'm from the south of JHB RSA. I am a beginner mountainbiker & work in the advertising industry. I am looking for people or groups to ride with in my area during the week & weekends.

Cheers.

Hi everybody. I am originally from Guatemala, but I have lived in the USA for 20 years now. I have always liked bike riding, but my best friend who is 50 years old got me hooked on mountain bike riding 3 years ago. Then, 2 months ago we switched to road bikes and I am looking forward to get better on it.
