Where are you from, what do you do?

Greetings all. Just joined the forum for some road bike buying advice, and general biking chit chat. Currently in the depths of winter here in the UK (to be exact the north Cotswolds if that means anything to you), which means damp and miserable, yet still try and get out for a 60K circuit once a week which leaves me and the bike looking like runners-up in a fight with a muckspreader. :D

I'm in Canada......Niagara Falls, Ontario. The trails for biking around here are awesome. Nothing like travelling through wine country. To drink in the scenery, and by sampling a few drops of the local nectar. Cycling around the Falls themselves is impressive. I just moved here recently from Northern Ontario. The cycling season here in the Niagara Region is a little longer than in Northern Ontario. The hills if you can find them are a great challenge...the Niagara escarpment is a long way up to climb in some areas. Whereas in some areas are flat, like being in the prairies of Canada.

Just a simple note..I noticed in an old Guiness book of records (2000) that the speed record on a bicycle is almost 167 miles an hour set in 1998 on the Bonneville Flats. Check it out.

I have a curious question for cyclists...which do you think is best for cycling....a chain driven mountain bike or a shaft drive mountain bike. For shaft driven.. see www.dynamicbicycles.com.

Have a nice day and keep on pedalin'....... ;) :)

I am retired and a chemical engineer. Originally from Montana, worked in aerospace in utah. Have been a bike rider for 40 years, done some touring and now ride 4 times a week with others in my club.

USA, Masachusetts, Cape Cod. Practicing in physical medicine and sports medicine as a DC, EMT and strength & conditioning specialist (training athletes) for 15 years. Just started riding again 2 years ago after 25 years off the bike. Did my first race last year then saw a horrendous crash and got spooked. In the process of upgrading my disability and health insurances so I can race again this spring. Have a full winter of training planned (using the Joe Friel book "Cyclist's Bible") and hope to be competitive in the over-40 Cat 4-5 group in '07. Looking for all the help I can get, and maybe to offer help if anyone cares about what I know.

Hey There!

I'm from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and also new to the road-biking scene. Looking to communicate with anyone who has some advice for a lady trying hard to ride competitively.

Mark Corbeau, I just quit my modelling job (we've all got to grow up sometime) to go back to my last year of med school, but cycling will surely be a lifelong passion.

The better you look, the more you see.

Hiya all.

I'm Elzth2005 and I live in SE England right next to the sea.

I'm what the guys here call a "mature" student, and am currently working like mad to put to rights the result of working an 8 hour day deskbound job for 13 years :). Almost there !!!

35K is a good start to the day. How long does it take you guys/gals out there to do this kind of distance. I could do with something to compare to.

I currently do 1/2 hour each morning, and use upbeat music to keep up the pace.

It takes me about an 1H20 to ride 35k, but it also depends what route I'm riding. How far do you ride every morning?

I'm from beautiful Lake Arrowhead, California, USA. I started in the dirt about 10 years ago (we have good trails and 3 well known XC series within 30 minutes), took up road cycling and centuries, and have benn bitten by the time trial bug.

Good Question :).

I don't currently measure the distance I cover, instead concentrating on my heart rate zone and making sure I do a minimum 1/2 hour. But I am going to get a mileometer again to start getting an accurate picture of how I'm doing as I'm ready to crank things up a couple of notches over the winter.

That being, it is interesting to see what other people achieve.

What terrain do you ride ? And temperatures. I didn't pick up originally that you are in South Africa. The heat kills me off, I can go faster in the cold ...

Kind regards
:)
