Hi all I'm in Manchester UK. An engineer at Manchester Airport, 55, 22 stone.
Me & my wife have family in Melbourne & Sydney.
Hopefully I'm going to start to take up cycling to loose weight & gain fittness, the only worry is I have oesteo-arthritus in my knees and worry about cycling making it worse. Any thoughts greatfully recieved.

Hi Dave,
Yeah I can sympathise with you in regard to knee problems. I suffered work related chondromalacia, which in laymen’s terms means “irritation of the undersurface of the kneecap” in both knees a few years ago. Although not as debilitating as osteoarthritis is it caused me a bit of grief.

I think that we all need to try to stay as fit and healthy as possible, for a whole lot of good reasons as we get older. There seems to be a lot of argument about whether cycling is a good thing to do when afflicted with osteoarthritis but the arguments overall seems to be in favour. As much as I would like to see everyone take up cycling (off road MTB preferably) you just have to find something that fat lazy buggers like myself can stick with consistently. I am 50 years old and overweight, but after being a relatively inactive person for most of my life, I discovered a real passion for Mountain Bike Riding about four and a half years ago. You can see how silly a old bloke can be here on my YouTube Video channel http://www.youtube.com/user/TommoNineSixThree Currently I ride all year round, approx five days a week here in the Canberra the Australian Capital. And I can assure you that I find it hard to get going in our current winter’s semi dark mornings before work. Particularly as it has dropped down as low as minus 4 Celsius some mornings over the last week.

Mate Good luck with your knees and try to get a bit of exercise like we all should.

I am from Lake Mills, IA a pretty small town and I am currently training for Ragbrai which is a ride across the state of Iowa. I usually ride anywhere from 1-3 hours a day. I am also currently a senior in college.

Check your vitamin D level. If you're anything like the rest of the UK, you're probably deficient. There are many, many studies linking osteoarthritis and joint pain/inflammation to vitamin D deficiency. And there are several very recent studies showing that vitamin D level is also related to genetic metabolism of cholesterol; i.e. you can get the same amount of sun as the guy next to you but you'd both have different vitamin D levels.

Anyway, check it out. If your doctor's behind the curve and won't order the test, you can order it online through sites like the Vitamin D Council.

I figured this thread would be appropriate for my first post. :)

I live near Grand Rapids, Michigan. I am an artist and a senior in college working towards a bachelors in fine arts. I make paper and prints, mostly, and I love it.

I bike for fun, and my road bike is a 1978 white Puch.

Greetings to one and all;

I live in British Columbia's lower mainland and work as a lab technician. I have been riding since I was a kid. When I lived on Vancouver Island I commuted for many years. I have many years of road and XC experience. I rode DH for a season and look forward to doing more. In the 1990's owned a bike shop and for 7 years wrenched, raced, taught and mentored. I managed a race team and ran cycling club. Now at 50, I ride mostly just road and XC. I teach a little bit and am occupied with researching nutrition options. Life is good. :D

At this time I have a Univega mtb with slicks on it for my commuter and a '74 Raleigh Sports I tool around my neighborhood on.

Hi, I'm Alex from Ontario Canada. I love biking a lot, its fast, its environment friendly and its fun. I love biking fast, I'm not a professional speed biker or anything, but I just like to go real fast. When I'm on a downhill, I love going to speeds that cars go.

Anyways, to be honest, I joined because I'm having some issues with my bike, but I will check it out with you guys later.

cheers!

i'm from china, and i am an editor, working in a foreign trade company selling swiss brand watches!

Hi! My name is Jeremy and I hail from Kansas. I grew up riding several miles a day delivering newspapers and have always had a love for cycling. High school, college, marriage and life got in the way and derailed me from my desires, but divorce and a stress and drama filled life have brought me back where I want to be. I recently got my hands on a used Trek 5200 from my local dealer and am absolutely thrilled. I have put 105 miles on it in 8 days not all of which were spent riding. I have several local people that have helped me along the way and look forward to the guidance from here as well. One local guy is about my age (32) and is getting into racing pretty heavy. With a little work, I hope to be right there with him. There was a local 20 mile ride on Saturday that my sis took pics at. I will share some as soon as I see them! Where life is right, I am pouring myself into the pedals. That is my happy place from the chaos I am living in.
