Hi

My 13year old son is interested cycling and would like to attend a try out
or open day with a view to entering road races for kids, does such a thing
exist as I have no connections with cycling and would like to know where to
start him.
As a guide after 3 rides he can already complete 40km rides along Beach Rd
Melbourne on his mountain bike at average speed around high mid 20's, is
this in the ball park to start.

Thanks
Rick

Depending on where you live, I'd suggest joining one of the clubs in
your area. For juniors, track is more fun and better racing than road,
so a club that has a track racing program would be a good idea.

I guess that by your mentioning Beach Rd, you may be close to
Caulfield, as such, I'd recommend you get in touch with Mal Sawford
from CCCC :

I should have also mentioned Blackburn (vested interest, that's my
club), who run a J cycle program specifically to teach juniors how to
race, also have a look at www.bbn.org.au, Blackburn have club track
bikes that they lend to juniors for no charge, so you don't have to
shell out for a new bike to have a try and a go at it. The Blackburn
velodrone and clubrooms is in East Burwood :

My son is 12 and rides with Blackburn, they have quiet a few kids in the club now, mainly because of J cycle. They train all year round in safety, at the Velodrone during summer and Seimens during winter. It's a great atmosphere for the kids and the instructors are fantastic.

I am in the Northern suburbs but meet up with a mate from the southern
suburbs for a Beach road ride and my son has started coming along.
Lots of info from those web sites, thanks.

You may be interested in the Coburg club, if you live north of the
city. There's a number of riders I work with who ride with coburg and
they have a strong track program.
