I am looking to buy a beginner road bike, I know the ones I am looking at are cheap but I need to know which one is the best out of my 2 options and WHY? Option 1: Carrera TDF 16 speed (Halfords) http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...0691&langId=-1 Option 2: Triban 3 24 speed (Decathlon) http://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-3-...d_8239800.html Thank you for your help

Not familiar with either brand. Probably are UK specific. Generic 6061 aluminum frames, no difference there. The big difference that I see is that the first has a compact double crank up front with 8-speed Shimano 2300 RD and shifter, and Tektro brakes. The second has a triple crank up front, and no link to find any of the other drive train/brake specs. They look like very basic entry level bikes.

If you're a new rider, and have to deal with hills, you might want the triple crank. Most flat to rolling terrain, I'd go with the compact double. With a 2300 rear derailleur, you'd likely be limited to a 25 or 26 tooth largest cog on your rear, and you might have more trouble getting up hills without a small third ring on your front crank.
