  1. I just needed to know what pedals are considered to be safer.
I just had my first wreck after riding for a year. This occurred while sprinting a hill and I when I was pulling my leg up my cleat came out of the pedal. This caused me to loose my balance and go down at 23mph. Good thing Im 19 or I think it wouldve done more damage. So I needed to know if you all think its my tension on my SPD's or if there are safer pedals around.

I don't think SPD's are unsafe. I had a set of Ritcheys (SPD knock-offs) at one time and I know if I backed the tension off too much I could pull straight out of them with no heel rotation at all. I think you probably just need to increase your release tension.

Do you mean riding for a year with clipless pedals? Depending upon your mileage and/or how much you walk around in your cycling shoes, maybe your cleats are worn down and need replacing.

  4. I have put around 1500 miles on them in the past 2 1/2 months or so. I try not to walk on them when I dont need to, to prevent replacing them. Thanks for the feedback. The insert doesnt appear to have lots of wear.
