Defamation laws in Australia are such that the person making the statement must be able to demonstrate the the claim to the satisfaction of the court, if it is likely to impact negatively on the reputation of the public figure.
In a nut shell, if the person making the statement is unable substantiate the claim then they have the almost impossible task of demonstrating that the public figure has not undergone any decline in status of any sort, because of the claim. That's very hard to do.

I don´t like Lance Armstrong but that does not mean he´s a drug ( or any other type of ) cheat just the type of texan that tend´s to ******** Europeans and give Americans in general a bad name because of his lack of manners / culture .
He is the best rider in Le Tour and like Indurain he will not be beaten until he breaks and ALLOWS somebody else to win ( and boy do I hope that it happens this year )
