Dear Dr. Vandeman:

I was recently reading your articles on mountain biking and it's
effects on the environment and other effects it has, and also your opinions
formed about mountain bikers. I was surprised at the lack of intelligence that
was seemingly presented in your articles. You are an educated man, granted, but
I think you need to research a bit more before writing things. I was very
surprised when you made mountain bikers out to be the really bad guys,
rebbelious, and people that do not heed environmental concerns or issues. This
is very, very untrue. I live in Canada, where mountain biking is a widely
accepted and respected sport, and not because of our rebellious attitudes and
seemingly bad manners. I would like to know what you base your opinions on, as
they seem rash and uneducated. Being a mountain biker myself I know about all
the different problems and issues it can arouse, but what I have found over the
years is that mountain bikers have more respect for the environment that even,
say, hikers or equestrians.

I can tell by your writing that you have never been involved in anything
that was considered, extreme or "out there". This does not matter but as the old
addage goes, "Walk a mile in someone elses shoes", it tells me that it would be
good if you maybe became a part of the community. Even one so educated as
yourself cannot have such a low opinion of a whole massive industry.

What may have happened to you is that you have met a few mountain bikers
and have heard stories, but only bad ones. I would also like to know if you have
contacted any mountain biking organizations such as the I.M.B.A. (International
Mountain Biking Association) Or NORBA. These people would be good to talk to as
they are very knowleadgable and can explain very well the effects of mountain
biking on society and environment.

Again, I am not trying to discredit you or disprove you, I would just like
some answers to the rash opinions and stereo. Thanks for your time, please e-mail
back.

I just read your article, i do not appreciate it at all, i mountain bike, i have
a bike that cost well over $3000, i'm proud of who i am, i love the feeling of
being in the air, it is addicting because i can't get enough of it. What you
said was slander and it is not wanted across the mountain bike community, we
ride the trails, we love the trails, none of us want to see any animals die, get
injured or get run out of their homes, but we want the trails so we have to
build them. Animals addapt, and so do we by making it the way we want it. You
tell everyone who goes on www.pinkbike.com what you think about biking, there
are thousands upon thousands of mountain bikers, bmxers, road cyclist's and
recreational cyclist's there on a daily basis. If you want to help the planet,
get rid of the internal combustion engine then worry about bikes that don't
produce greenhouse gases.

Sincerly, Mike Allen

You're impressive. Most of your statements are backed up with "PhD." And
if you haven't noticed, the four foot wide "dead section" on Mammoth
mountain for mountain bikers is just as glorious as your two and a half
foot wide hiking trail. That's right, some hiker killed plants to enjoy
nature!

I forgot to add, that the internet you use runs on exploitation of the
earth. Metals mined to form cables, clear-cutting miles of trail for
hydro
lines. Matter of fact, your house/dwelling was most likely built where a

forest once was! And I bet you ride in a motorized vehicle every once in
a
while, and sometimes I bet you even wish you had the stamina to ride a
bike. Even the trails you hike on were once tree-and-bush, meaning
someone
had to cut and trample precious wildlife habitat. So you are just adding
to
the destruction. The universities where you
studied/teach/taught/researched
at were also created on land which was once a forest, or a clearing
which
housed thousands, if not millions of animals and insects alike. Almost
everything in today's world is an exploitation of nature, so stop
picking
on bikers. Have you realized how fast the South American rain forests
are
disappearing? Or How much of even America's forest are disappearing,
though
I don't live in your war-happy country.
