For those of U who missed it, here is a photo of the Wilder path that emulates the standard we
forsee along innumerable highways all across America:

Because there are just too many new bents in town and a fair amount of interest in our Santa Cruz
Union of Bent Bicyclists http://www.bikeroute.com/SCRUBB from out of the area as well (there's even
a homebuilt Groundhugger http://rqriley.com/imagespln/briber.jpg I am dying to see that has
expressed interest & an electric Quetzal from Electric Sierra Cycles I saw that I want U to see that
says he'll be there), the time for another SCRUBB rides seems at hand. Let's meet at the Seabright
Brewery on Sunday Feb 23 at 8:30 AM with a 9 AM departure to the bicycle heaven I describe below.
From the Brewery we're looking at somewhere between 15 and 20 round trip leisure miles.

If you're looking for more challenge, after we all regroup at Wilder a separate ride will climb to
the beautiful UCSC campus, with its delicious new asphalt roads and sweeping views of the Monterey
Bay . This route will add six miles to the ride and some worthy uphill work.

While another ride can bike the coast to Davenport another 7 miles away.....

Directions to the Brewery can be found at: http://www.bikeroute.com/SBrewMap.GIF

Bring a picnic lunch!!

Btw: **All cyclists** are invited to see what an NBG can look like!! Btw2: We can also talk about
future rides to the ZZip and Easy Racer factories...

---------- Wilder Path Draft -----------------------------

Having twice biked across the US as well as on some of its better road bikeable paths, I can
honestly say that right here in Santa Cruz we have a very good example of how I foresee the NBG
working in many parts of the US (the Moss Landing to Castroville Hwy One stretch for starters).
What I will describe in the words below is a path that runs from the edge of our small city along
side a high speed road that a fair amount of long haul cyclists still use to access the coastal
towns on the way to San Francisco. A mere 20 or so feet from fast moving vehicles in many places,
the asphalt strip to which I refer is different from any other arterial in the area in that it is
great for families as well as those rusty or new to cycling. On one side of the path, ocean vistas
are broken up by rolling farms fields and the occasional sight of those riding horseback. And all
this is made even nicer by the fact that it is far away enough from town that it is not over run by
hikers and joggers.

As such then, all of this makes for a great afternoon outing for those right here in Santa Cruz, the
home of the National Bicycle Greenway. There's even a state park maintained rest room at the end of
the path. Besides a complete absence of cars, the few hills are even tame. And this peaceful path
can even be accessed via an oceanside path and the lightly traveled roads of the west side
industrial park.

Probably six round trip miles in all, if you start at Swanton Blvd., this bicycle heaven is the
recently completed path to Wiider Park. Besides a bathroom facility, the park, an old dairy farm
itself, has a museum and is locally famous for its miles of mountain bike trails. As well, it's
outdoor tables and well groomed gardens make for a perfect picnic. En route to the trails, on the
other side of a tunnel that leads from the main park compound, there's even an active horse corral.

If you are looking for the perfect bike outing in Santa Cruz, even if you are not a mountain biker
and especially if you want to teach kids about the joys of cycling , this is it!

To get there from Swanton Blvd. at the end of West Cliff Dr., take a left on Delaware to the first
right on Natural Bridges Dr to a left about a quarter mile later on Mission St at this point now a
frontage road to Hwy One (At Western Dr, the Mission St that runs thru the west side of town from
Chestnut St. changes to Hwy One).

The Wilder Ranch/Davenport path is free. A nice daily excursion to get away from it all for me. I
don't sign anything! Nice to scare the horses for a change!
