Will an 8 speed chain work fine with 9 speed set up?

Hi.
I did a silly thing. I ordered an 8(or 7 or 6) speed chain (Shimano HG50) for my singlespeed(not fixed).
Then I forgot that and won(local auction) another chain for my SS which I've fitted.
I need to replace the chain on my 9 speed training bike. Will the 8 speed HG50 work well?
I notice on the back it has comparative widths - the HG50 links are 7.1mm whereas they say the 9 speed ones are 6.5mm.
Will that difference make shifting etc a problem?

Cheers, Paul :)

Do not use a 8 speed (7.1 or 7.3mm) chain on a 9 speed cassette.

Chains are cheap, just buy another 9 speed one, sell the HG50... ;)
