Just when I was naive enough to think that we were at last seeing a drug/doping free tour today's news about Vino brings it all crashing down...but yesterday's recovery was obviously just too good to be true - no wonder he knew he was going to win!

The short answer is the extra hemoglobin increases the amount of oxygen that can be delivered to the muscles, which is usually the bottleneck for aerobic performance.
