Will this crankset work on a Fuji Absolute?

Hi all:

My daughter has a Fuji Absolute flatbar hybrid bike. Current front-
end setup is Shimano Tiagra FD-443 front derailleur, Shimano Rapid-
fire SL-R440 shifter (both 8 speed) and RPM Road 52/42/30 crankset.
I'd like to drop the gearing on the bike and I'm thinking of swapping
in a Shimano Deore FC-M530 Crankset at 44-32-22T. My only concern is
whether the front shifter/derailleur setup will work here. I know
that certain combinations of shifters and derailleurs will work better
with some cranksets than others, but I don't understand what defines
"suitability."

Does anybody have any thoughts if this swap will work?

TIA.

That shouldn't be your only concern. Is the existing bottom bracket
square taper? Then you'll have to get an octalink BB. Yeah, there is
a deal with some flatbar shifters only liking a certain derailleur,
but if both are intact, no worries.

If you haven't bought the cranks yet, and it's a square taper, you
might want to go for something also square, like a cheap and cheerful
Sugino XD300, for around $45.

You'll also want to lower the derailleur cage slightly. You want about
a mm's of clearance between the chainring and cage when shifting.

It should work as is. As Landotter said, you should lower the
derailleur a little, to get it closer to the chainring.

A "more suitable" combination would include a Shimano "mountain" front
derailleur. The difference is that the "mountain" derailleurs have a
cage that follows the arc of the smaller chainring more closely. This
may be needed if the front shifting isn't to your daughter's tastes.

Probably work fine, in spite of the FD 'arc' differences.

Except these FB shifters aren't really compatible with MTB FDers, just
like road stuff.By screwing with the cable attach you can get it to
sorta work but...not really.
