At 80. He was wearing the yellow jersey when he went off the road in perhaps the most famous fall in

Part of the legend of his fall is that they threw down a rope to pull him back up, but the rope was
too short. They lengthened it by tying in all of the tubular tyres they had, but after getting him
up the tyres had all stretched and couldn't be used again so they had to pull the team.
