  1. Hi. It is hard to get fruit in the region I live so I was wondering if raisins would replace the
required daily fruit intake; if I'm not mistaken a 160lb 40 yo male should intake three portions of
fuit daily, if I can replace it with raisins, what would the daily intake should be? AND, what would
be a good replacement for vegetables?

    Thanks much for your input.

. <snip> Raisins are a good source of antioxidants with a high ORAC value (oxygen radical absorbance
capacity). In a randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over study the researchers investigated the
effect of raisins on urinary 8-oxo-d'-deoxyguanosing (8-oxo-2'-dG), a specific marker for DNA
damage due to oxidative stress. Four male and four female healthy adult athletes ran a triathlon
twice, two weeks apart. Subjects were divided into two groups and received either 170 g of raisins
or a glucose drink of equivalent caloric value prior to the swim and halfway through the bike ride
and run. The groups were reversed during the second triathlon. Those who consumed the raisins
showed virtually no oxidative damage (0.05 µL 8-oxo-2'-dG) compared to those on glucose (1.06 µL).

  3. Once upon a time, our fellow Todd Mercer rambled on about "Would raisins replace the daily fruit
intake?." Our champion De-Medicalizing in sci.med.nutrition retorts, thusly ...

So, that must be either the Moon, Mars, or the Space Station?

Yeah, ... Sure, Right! You are *not* very believable.

Ever hear of canned fruit or even canned/bottled fruit juice?

No more than grapes would. In other words, there is no *variety* in a diet consisting of
    only raisons.

    Produce

    Canned vegetables

    V-8 juice
