My vintage bike has a maillard 700 hub on the rear wheel.
The hub has plenty of years left in it, but sadly the axle has
developed a serious kink and needs replacing. Any tips as to what axle
will fit it? Or any axles (or hubs-and-axles) for sale at all?

If the balls are 1/4 inch..probably any axle set, with cones, locknuts,
etc., will work. If the axle is somewhat standard, 10by1, 10by26,
9.5by26...then any decent bike shop will have them, hollow or solid.
