Just a point to keep in mind ... it usually takes 2 or 3
years before the IRS will audit you or catch these things.
I've received tax checks within weeks of filing, only to
receive the lovely notice from the government 2 years later
stating they
me, it is a bite that these things are not questioned or
checked immediately.
I do doubt though, that you will be questioned as what you
were able to claim is more than likely fairly insignificant.
If I recall correctly, the weightloss deductible is to be
included in your unreimbursed medical expenses. Only a
percentage of that total may be written off. I no longer
know the exact figure as we now pay an accountant to take
care of all this for us (not worth the IRS letters) - but I
believe it to be something like anything over 7.5% of your
income. So if you made $40,000 last year, any unreimbursed
expenses incurred over $3000 would be what was allowed to be
deducted. The percentage may have increased this year, but I
do believe this is how the rule works. We pay our own
medical insurance (at the tune of $190/week) so it is in our
best interest to use this deduction. But most people don't
come anywhere close to the lowest limit.
As far as weightloss fees being allowed for tax deduction.
Again, my understanding last year was that a Dr. had to
recommend you lose weight for health reasons, and it must be
documented in your charts prior to the date you started.
Government probably wouldn't check, but in case they did - I
believe that is the rule they follow.

and should go (like a specific disease state). However, I
joined WW without a doctor telling me to do so because I
was way overweight. I said what the heck and I put my WW
fee's on my taxes and figured if they fought them I'd just
remove them and refile. My fees went through as a
deductible and I received my check no problem.
For the first time ever stomach stapling surgery is
deductible too (I don't know the specific rules). But I
let my one coworker know as she had that surgery this
past year.
Gov't is slowly coming around to realize that obesity is a
problem in America and little things to help people help
themselves are a good thing!

Quoted message said:Hi there
I'm really sorry in advance if this is a dumb question,
or if someone's asked before, but I was wondering if WW
can be deducted from taxes as a medical expense? A friend
of mine said that it might. I suppose there might have to
be proof from a doctor that my starting weight was
unhealthy, and I can get that. Anyway, I'd be very
grateful for answers from anyone who knows!
