so go on then.. how should I get to work?
I will give you a few hints.

I have to be at work for 9:00 AM. I work in Sheffield as an electronics
engineer.
I live halfway between my workplace and my Wife's workplace, she works in
Harrogate as a Scientist.
We are 10 miles from the nearest rail station that can get either of us to
our destination, the local trains do not allow bicycles to be carried on the
peak time routes.
I am not working for my "convenience" I am working to contribute to
society.. maybe that is something that you are not familiar with..
The bus service does not start until 8:00 AM. so there is no way I could
catch a bus to Wakefield or Barnsley to catch a train to be at work by 9:00
AM.

so. there are a few options.

find me a job that is closer to my home that will pay me the £40K that I
deserve for my work.
Find a job for my wife that pays £70K so I don't have to work.
Find me a job that pays £70K so my wife does not have to work, then we can
move closer to it.

until there is a reliable transport system that runs at the times that we
need to get us to work, we have to run 2 cars.
We both use bicycles and public transport at weekends when possible though.

I can think of at least two more options along those lines which are rather
more realistic - you're not really trying...

You don't have to run two cars. You've chosen to do so - stop pretending
otherwise.

TBH 30+ miles each way car commute for both of you sounds like a right waste
of time and money. At least with a bike commute you get the exercise, and
with a train you can do other stuff.

Because a folder is much more expensive than two cars?

Getting L70K between you isn't convenient?

And how much of what's left of the 70K after tax goes to running the
two cars?

Enoough to make it worthwhile working.
Car 1 is a 1.6l Fiesta Diesel. 1997 Cheap to run, cheap insurance and £35
per year to tax. Will keep it for at least 5 years. so the depreciation is
less than 2K per year. Bought outright, so no interest to pay.
Car 2 is a Landrover Defender 90. 1998, owned since 1999 so no worried
about depreciation any more. Bought outright, so no interest paid. Replacing
it would mean a higher cost in depreciation than I am paying in extra fuel
and the £180 in RFL.

Well it isn't going to make us rich is it?

Which is a neat dodge. It's not exactly misery either; it is, in fact -
convenient.
