Campy? Shimano? VAR? Park?

I'm looking to get a nice chain tool, ideally one that will work on any
3/32" chain from 5 speed to 10.

Does the "pin-stop" on the Park make a big difference? Is there aything
comprable on the other chain tools?

Thanks in advance,

-Bruce-

I've had some cheesy and cheap chain tools that worked, but they were a pain
to deal with. Then I got a Park chain tool. Nothing fancy. Just their
standard workshop chain tool. (You wouldn't carry this honkin' thing in you
seat bag!) Well, it's awesome. Pops them pins right out and right back in
again with ease. And it's easy to just tweak that pin ever so slightly to
get it seated just right.

I can't speak for all those other tools you mentioned, but the Park is a
breeze.

The Park Mini Chain Brute is very nice. I doubt it would be the best
thing for a Campag 10-sp chain, but Park do claim it works with *all*
chains. I use mine for 3/32" and 1/8" chain, and the pin stop works.

I own the Var: everyday workhorse, Park: a less robust Var. and Rolhoff: the
winner, it does what the others do, but it has an anvil that allows
re-peining (very useful on tandem synch chains) . Yes it is VERY expensive.

Back when I was working in a shop, we swore by the Park CT-2 tool:
http://www.parktool.com/tools/CT_2.shtml . It's ten times faster than
any of the screw-type chain tools.

I believe the Campy 10-speed chains require a proprietary tool for
dissassembly/reassembly. The Shimano catalog lists a special tool for
10-speed chains (TL-CN23), but it's also listed as "7-10 speed" in
other places. I dunno- I'm sticking with 8-speed for now.

Hey, I agree with Craze!

Bought a Ritchie chain tool (assume CPR5 or similar) in 1996 when first
started mtb-ing, and it's still going strong.

Shimano make a very, very fine chain tool.

I like this a lot, too. It's small enough to carry (if you want to), yet still
good enough for routine maintenance, is fairly cheap & well made.

Is this true? Do you really need the special tool, or is this Shimano simply trying to get you to throw more of your money at them?

If, in a pinch, I needed to use my multi-tool to break the chain (out on the road), will I damage anything?
