"POLICE are investigating a daylight robbery which left a cyclist
unconscious.
A 38-year-old from Wrexham was approached by a group of five men as he
walked along the Millennium cycleway and footpath in Kingsway, Newton,
Chester, on Tuesday January 29.
At about 1.35pm it is thought two of the men from the group struck the
victim with an iron bar and a stick. They then escaped with his
bicycle.
Cheshire Constabulary spokeswoman Jacqui Hanson said: "The victim was
struck on the head with a stick and what was believed to be an iron
bar causing
him to lose consciousness.
"He came to and got up and ran across the field to some shops where he
phoned the police."
The victim was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital after
suffering a gash to the head.
Police officers interviewed the man in the hospital but he declined to
make a complaint.
Mrs Hanson added: "The matter is being investigated by the Specialist
Investigation Unit now. It is being treated as a robbery."
PC Paul Taylor, Neighbourhood Policing Unit office manager, said: "If
someone states they don't want to make a statement we are still duty
bound to seek further information.
"When someone is attacked by a number of people in a busy place in the
afternoon we need to be on top of it and try to identify the
offenders."
