Try Smartwool. Really, just try one pair of the thin ones.
(Ultralight cycling I think) I never wear anything on my feel but
Smartwool now.

I like the Gold Toe athletic socks. They have them (or used to?) at
Target. Very inexpensive, very thin, very low, good as cycling socks.

I think these are the ones I like:

I've tried Smartwool socks and they're fine while they last, which
isn't very long for their ultra thin socks (I think I had tried their
thin, running socks). Their thick cycling socks last pretty well
though, but it's not clear to me why they're as thick as they are.

TRY www.campmor.com/

campmor sends weekly internet sale via trailmail. sign up. trailmail
ofetn lodges behind the regular mail ??? but trailmail arrives at
week's end so check on Sat or Sunday night.
campmor, i herd, oversoxs and unloads weekly. this does tend to trail
off during the summer when J. Blow will spend anyhting to get a yellow
framisat for his baldwankle.
I'm accumulating sox for a BC expedition: one or two pair of wierd
blends at half price once a month. the site may overload so place
inquires into the task bar and allow to gestate while continuing. see
the performance T's for dayglo cottton/polyester-varitech

I still have some cheap white Coolmaxes that I bought at Sportmart years
ago. Best deal I ever purchased. $4 for 3 pair at the time.

The best sock and deal are Champion Elites that are sold at Costco.
They are 100% Coolmax and cost <$2/pr. They are both inexpensive,
durable, and have just the right loft.
