torn MENISCUS

My family practice doctor feels I may have a torn meniscus in my left knee. There is no pain when
I'm running or walking -- but, sometimes when I bend it very sharp it is excruciatingly
painful...his comment was I can continue to run as long as there is no pain. My concern is I don't
want to make this any worse while waiting for an appt. with an orthopedic specialist.

Anyone with any track record (pardon the pun) on this type of injury. I am not a fast runner 8:40 to
9:15 pace averaging about 30 miles a week.

If it doesn't hurt while running then there's no need to stop.

I have torn my right knee medial meniscus three times and had that knee scoped three times, and I
don't think one can make this judgment without knowing:
1) is it a medial tear?
2) is it a fray or a true tear (which generally creates a cartilage flap that can fold back into the
joint when open or bent)
3) the extent of the tear

Pain alone is no measure of whether or not you are doing more damage. In fact the internal swelling
won't allow you to feel pain at the point of injury anyway.

For my first two tears I ran on mine until I couldn't any longer. On my third I spun a stationary
bike instead. If you feel *excruciating pain* when you bend your knee I think I would just get my
cardio and calorie burn in a way that doesn't imply body weight on the joint....at least until an
ortho looks at your MRI.

Ridiculous.

$ 25.00 each time. BCBS covered the balance.

I would imagine you are looking at 4 or 5 grand when it is all said and done, Seems to me the
facility cost was 1700.00 and the Doc was around 2500.00 for the most recent one, but the bills I
did receive may have reflected contracted rates between BCBS, and HealthOne and the ortho.
